SAVVY
SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded !)
Tetes Noires -- Chains/Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby (American
Dream LP; Rapunzel)
For some
reason it has been a long haul since we last played Minneapolis' Tetes
Noire, and there's no good reason for that. Tetes Noire ("black
heads," for the sextet's dark hair) included this Goffin/King writ
pair 'o songs on their otherwise all-original 1984 LP "American
Dream." Chris Osgood, of the Suicide Commandos, produced. We were
inspired to play this by the band's appearance in "First Avenue
Hay Day," a two-hour film about the bands of Minneapolis' First
Avenue nightclub. The film utilizes video shot by the club from 1985-1992,
then basically forgotten in the basement till an enterprising filmmaker
convinced the management to loan him the surviving footage. Interspersed
with vintage (and illuminating) interview clips of manager Steve McClellan
and other club and rock luminaries, it is one killer film, and guaranteed
to put a smile on the face of anyone who, like Radio Rumpus Room's hosts,
were here "back in the day." Unfortunately the film showed
only once, a sold-out performance at last week's Sound Unseen festival,
and we can only hope that it's brought back again. And soon!
