"He
said to me: 'You can't sing like Nancy Nice Lady anymore. You have to
sing for the truckers... You've been married and now you're divorced,
and people know that. So, let's lose this virgin image. Let's get rid
of it.' "
--
Nancy Sinatra, recounting advice from Lee Hazelwood prior to the start
of their creative collaborations
For the most part this week's show paid tribute to two artists we lost
during the week, both to cancer: Dave Dean, founding member of Minneapolis'
Stillroven, and songwriter, producer and performer Lee Hazelwood.
For
15 years now Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m.
on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and 106.7 St. Paul. The
show streams live on the Internet; the two most recent shows are archived
in RealAudio on the KFAI website, www.kfai.org.

SAVVY
SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)
The Stillroven -- Cast Thy Burden Upon The Stone (Cast Thy Burden
Upon...; Sundazed)
Dave Dean,
keyboardist and founding member of Minneapolis' Stillroven, died this
week of cancer. He was only 60 years old. Dean and drummer Phil Berdahl
were the only members of the band that were present for all four of
its iterations from 1966 to 1970. From sharkskin suits to psychedelic
tunics and beyond -- that was the course of the Stillroven. Dean's mug
is the one you see on the cover and back tray card of the Stillroven
collection "Cast Thy Burden Upon..." compiled and released by Sundazed
Records in 1996. (And no, as keyboardist, I don't know why he is hoisting
a guitar over his head in the picture. Maybe it was easier than lifting
his usual instrument!) A collection of the band's later, somewhat "heavier"
works recorded for A&M but never released, "Too Many Spaces," was released
in 2003. Thanks to Dave Dean for the music he left behind for us, the
listeners of Radio Rumpus Room, and all his fans. (BTW, he received
sole songwriting credit for this great song.)

What
can you say about Lee Hazelwood, who died this week at the age of 78?
He was a monstrous talent -- baritone-voiced singer, observant songwriter,
producer, you name it. From stick-in-your-brain-forever pop hits to
the songs that have become mainstays of surf music, he did it all. A
maverick with a rare gift of observation, Lee Hazelwood was a rare one
indeed.
