SAVVY SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)
Di Dollari -- Alamogordo Shake
(self-titled; Mutant Music)

Di Dollari is a five-piece Minneapolis band that plays trance-like, hypnotic Ennio Morricone-influenced spaghetti-western instrumentals. It's the kind of stuff that you could imagine floating through the swirling delerium of Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name character after he's had his skull cracked with the butt of a .44 revolver and left to lay in the baking sand, and just before a fogged consciousness returns. Tonight we played what is probably their most rockin', radio-friendly track, but it's all worth your time. They also have a track "Farewell To Cheyenne" on the "For A Few Dollars More" comp, a various artists tribute to Ennio Morricone on the Dancing Bear label. Di Dollari's website is located at www.didollari.com.

R.I.P. HUNTER S. THOMPSON
The famed gonzo journalist died Sunday at 67, after plugging himself in the head with a .45 at his Owl Farm compound near Aspen Colorado. His best (and hugely influential) work was his earliest: "Hells Angels," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72," with a later collection of short works "The Great Shark Hunt and Other Stories" back in the caboose.

Our memorial drew on spoken word excepts from the "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" soundtrack album (Geffen, 1998) featuring Johnny Depp as Duke, and a dramatized curio also titled "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (Margaritaville, 1996) with Harry Dean Stanton as narrator, Jim Jarmusch as Duke, and Maury Chaykin as Dr. Gonzo. Songs we played included:
Jefferson Airplane -- White Rabbit (... Loves You box; RCA)
Warren Zevon -- Lawyers, Guns And Money (Excitable Boy; Asylum)
The Youngbloods -- Get Together

The Twilighters -- Nothing Can Bring Me Down (V/A Texas Flashback, Vol. 2; Way Back)
The Autumn Leaves -- Nights At The UFO
(The Twilight Hours Of...; Dabbler)
Astrali -- Vado Su In Alto
(V/A Bring Flowers To The World; Misty Lane)
