No new word on the restoration of the KFAI audio archives. Wjord has been February at best -- maybe as late as March. Yeah, we are bummed about this sad state of affairs as well.

For 15 years now Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and 106.7 St. Paul. The show streams live on the Internet; our RealAudio archives will return in a month or two. Just visit the RRR web page anytime to listen to this noise and accompanying yakkin' by Ron and Jean.

Tonight's show was our 12th annual "Day The Surf Stood Still" mid-winter surf special. Our theme tonight was "Surfin' In The Midwest," with all bands -- vintage and contemporary -- coming from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Nebraska. Throughout the night we played instrumentals and surf vocals at a ration of about 2:1. As we like to do whenever weather conditions permit, we broadcast this episode from the center of Minneapolis' ice-covered Lake Calhoun, shouting throughout over the shrieking wind..

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)
The Trashmen -- King Of The Surf/Baja
(live audience tape) Minneapolis, MN

I pulled these two tracks off a CD-R I made from an audience DAT recorded at the Cabooze Bar in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Oct. 21, 2000 (if my notes are correct). The occasion was a "battle of the bands" between the Trashmen and the visiting Los Straitjackets. Each band played two 45-minute sets, alternating with the other. (And no, no actual winner was determined.) I think this was the last time that the Trashmen played out -- here or anywhere. The band was original members Tony Andreason (lead guitar and vocal), Dal Winslow (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), Bob Reed (bass and backing vocals) and Tony's brother Mike (drums). Mike carried out the timekeeping duties of the irreplaceable Steve Wahrer, who passed away in 1989. -- Ron
