This is just a sample of what you'll be seeing here in the weeks to come. Our emphasis in this section will be on dragstrip action from days past at strips in the Upper Midwest, but any cool photos--like the vintage Pomona stuff below--are of course on the table. Please stop by again soon as we flesh things out and get this sucker strip-ready.

This ain't no "newstalgia" race, daddyo -- this here's the real deal. An A-V8 puts a holeshot on a Deuce at Pomona in 1952. See my father-in-law Julian Silverberg's color snaps of the Bean Bandits and others tearin' it up at the Pomona County Fairgrounds. Rare color! Real cars, not recreations!

It's Labor Day weekend, 1956, and the Platte Valley Customs A/Open Gas entry gets a push down the return road at the second ever Nationals at Kansas City. Look for more color photos by Julian Silverberg of both the famous and the forgotten from this historic event.

It's 1973, and the Dodge Rebellion pickup and the then-new Hell On Wheels tank are up at the 1,000-foot mark at Great Lakes Dragaway, Union Grove, Wisconsin. There will be a passel of vintage shots coming from this historic track.

The Gianino Racing Engines Challenger competed in the gasser classes in the Upper Midwest. Photographed here in 1973 at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Illinois.
