Note: All of Jim Oldsberg's projects (the Lost & Found series and The Flip Side) are excellent from cover to cover. Thoroughly researched, nicely designed with excellent illustrations -- we can't praise his books enough. It's no wonder he's tapped so often to write the liner notes for reissues of '60s Minnesota bands.

Minnesota Rocked! The 1960s (4th edition)
By Tom Tourville
(Midwest Publications, 104 pages saddlestitched; 1996)

Minnesota 45s (71 pages)
Minnesota LPs
(12 pages)
Minnesota CDs
(3 pages)
Remembering the Stillroven
(feature by Tom Campbell)
Scrapbook
(several pages of clippings from the 1967 "Music Scene" fanzine)

Note: Tourville's books are rife with misspellings, typos and inconsistencies -- an editor with no knowledge of the local music scene could have caught 80 percent of them. Still, we wouldn't be without this book and refer to it constantly.

They Couldn't Tame Us: The Wisconsin '60s Rock Discography (1st edition)
By Tom Tourville
(Midwest Publications, 100 pages saddlestitched; 1992)

Wisconsin 45s (74 pages)

Telecastin' With The Fendermen
(feature by Tom Tourville)
The Big Sound of The Northland
(feature by Tom Tourville)
Paul Stefen
(feature by Gary Myers)
Wisconsin 45s
(74 pages)

Note: Despite the usual Tourville misspellings and typos this is a necessary resource for fans of the Wisconsin garage scene. Pair this with Gary Myers' book (below) and you've got an excellent handle on Badger State activities in the 1960s.

Iowa Rocked! The 1960s (2nd edition)

The Midwest '60s Rock Art Collection (1st edition)
By Tom Tourville
(Midwest Publications, 108 pages saddlestitched; 1996)

Note: An illustrated collection of rare rock'n'roll posters from the Midwest. All posters are reproduced in B&W except for four plates reproduced in full-color. Interesting (if brief) text by author Tourville accompanies each.

Do You Hear That Beat: Wisconsin Pop/Rock in the '50s and '60s (1st edition)
By Gary E. Myers
(Hummingbird Publishing; 1994)

Wisconsin on the Charts (60 pages)
Historical/Relocated Chart Acts (10 pages)
The Cuca Story
(37 pages)

Cuca Discography (17 pages)
Milwaukee groups
(100 pages)

Historical/Relocated Milwaukee groups (5 pages)
Wisconsin Labels
(37 pages)
All Over This Land
(103 pages)
Broken down into the following regions:
Appleton/Fox Cities
Green Bay
Madison/Janesville
La Crosse
Racine/Kenosha
Sheboygan
Superior
Eau Claire
Stevens Point/Wausau

and elsewhere in the state
Note: Myers' book is structured differently than most discographies -- for a reason. Rather than being divided into the two categories of singles and LPs and then sorting them alphabetically by artist, this book lumps all vinyl formats together, then divides them up into chapters according to geographic/urban area, success on the charts, or whether they were on Sauk City's Cuca label (probably the most prolific regional indie label ever). At first glance this would seem to make using this resource book harder than it needs to be. And that would be the case, if the author intended it to be just another discography. But he doesn't. Approach it as a highly detailed book on '60s Wisconsin bands first, and a discography second, and its organization makes perfect sense. Thankfully a four-page index listing the bands alphabetically means that the cut-to-the-chase user can find a band in a hurry if they want to. However you look at it, this is a great, detailed book, with many mini-interviews inserted throughout the listings. The author is currently working on an all-new, supplementary edition, though there is no release date in the offing as of December, 2003.

Kicks (Vol. 7)
By Billy Miller and Miriam Linna
(1992)

Note: With the special multi-page Trashmen cover feature: "The Bird Dance Beat in their own words!" Fantastic stuff in tiny type -- it could take you a year of bathroom reading to finish this book -- easy.
